Night Harvest

Napa Valley's night harvests are a defining feature of the region’s renowned viticulture. Harvesting at night preserves the delicate flavors and quality of the grapes and provides a cooler, more comfortable environment for the skilled farmworkers who bring in each crop. This unique practice supports sustainability, improves working conditions, and enhances the final product, ensuring Napa Valley wines continue to set the standard for excellence.

Why Harvest at Night?

Nighttime harvesting is a practice rooted in both tradition and innovation. By gathering grapes in cool, stable nighttime temperatures, wineries can prevent early fermentation, preserving the fruit's vibrant flavors, balance, and acidity. This method also makes grapes easier to handle and press, reducing energy consumption in the winemaking process. The benefits of night harvesting go beyond the vineyard, resulting in wines with superior quality, balance, and flavor.

Supporting Farmworker Well-Being

Night harvests also offer a safer, more comfortable environment for farmworkers, sparing the teams from working under the day's intense heat. The cooler night air reduces physical strain and supports overall well-being, making it a win-win for farmworkers and the wineries they support. The Farmworker Foundation is committed to promoting practices like night harvesting that prioritize health and comfort while enhancing the industry’s high standards.

The Role of Innovation in Night Harvesting

Advancements in technology and lighting have made night harvesting more efficient and safe, allowing farmworkers to work with precision and care. Specialized lighting systems and modern equipment have transformed the process, creating a sustainable, efficient way to bring in the harvest.

Celebrating the Craft of Night Harvesting

Night harvesting is a testament to Napa Valley's farmworkers' dedication, skill, and resilience. It represents a blend of tradition and forward-thinking practices that keep Napa Valley at the forefront of the global wine industry. These workers contribute to the region’s legacy each season, ensuring that every bottle reflects the passion and commitment behind Napa Valley wines.

Farmworker Foundation Team's First-Hand Night Harvest Experience

In October 2024, the Farmworker Foundation’s Program Manager, Jill Durfee, and Julio Martinez, Administrative Assistant, were invited to observe a night harvest with the dedicated team at Bianco Winegrowing. From the moment of arrival, a warm welcome created an inclusive and positive atmosphere for the night.

The team displayed remarkable skill, speed, and precision throughout the harvest. Each worker was clear on responsibilities, with supervisors and crew leaders ensuring the night ran smoothly and safely. Reflective gear, proper lighting, and effective communication practices demonstrated a strong commitment to safety. Jose Delgado’s words reinforced this dedication: “The priority during harvest is safety more than anything. Trying to be as safe as possible for yourself and your coworkers.”

The night offered a view into the dedication and resilience of farmworkers whose contributions are essential to Napa Valley. Observing the harvest process highlighted the strength, perseverance, and skill that drive the agricultural industry and sustain Napa Valley’s thriving community. This dedication mirrors the experience of immigrant families who built a foundation through hard work and commitment, creating better lives for themselves and future generations.

The night harvest experience exemplified the Farmworker Foundation’s mission to empower farmworkers through education and professional development. Observing this dedication in action was invaluable, underscoring the importance of a safe and successful harvest season and the remarkable individuals who make it possible.
